Six different players found the back of the net as West Deptford defeated Collingswood 7-1 in the season opener for both teams as the 2000-2001 South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League got under way at Hollydell on Friday night. Looking like a complete different team from last year, West Deptford controlled play for most of the game and scored the only goal of the first period. Brandon Jackmuff tallied with just under one minute remaining in the period. Despite out-shooting Collingswood 16-4, the lead was only 1-0 heading into the second period thanks to the outstanding play in nets by Collingswood goalie Wiedmann.
Joe Pavlow tied the score at 1-1 early in the second period but that was the extent of the Collingswood offense. West Deptford took the lead for good with less than five minutes remaining in the second period as Ray Clifford deposited a rebound on a shot by Brad Clifford and heading into the third West Deptford led 2-1. Early in the third West Deptford scored a power play goal as Doug Dehart fed Jared Jackmuff in the slot and he blasted the puck by Wiedmann and the lead was 3-1. Less than four minutes later Pat Foster scored off a scramble in front to make it 4-1. Then with Collingswood on the power play, the Cliffords, (no relation), struck again as Brad converted a pass from Ray and with the short-handed goal put the game away at 5-1.
Goal by Dan Markley and another by Brandon Jackmuff closed out the scoring for West Deptford at 7-1. Playing in Tier 2, West Deptford looks quicker and if they continue to get balanced scoring, should have a successful season.
