High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 14, 2000
By Mike Costantino West Deptford scored five goals in the second period and breezed by Kingsway 8-2 in a SJHSIHL game played at Hollydell on Friday night. The Eagles got contributions from all their lines with Steve Wade, Jason Boyer and Gary Guinto scoring two goals apiece. West Deptford scored the only goal of the first period in the opening two minutes, as Brad Clifford tallied with the assist to Doug Dehart. The Eagles made it 2-0 at the nine minute mark with Wade scoring his first of two, banging home a rebound of a shot by Dehart. Ten seconds later Kingsway cut the lead to 2-1, as Marple scored on a pass from Stukas. But tonight was the Eagles night as they would blow open the game, scoring four goals in the next five minutes. First Boyer scored on the power play, and ninety seconds later, Wade made it 4-1 with Guinto assisting. Eighteen seconds later, Guinto converted a pass from Matt Foster and it was 5-1. With a four-goal lead, this young West Deptford team found itself in unfamiliar territory, having a big lead and trying to close the deal. After taking two consecutive penalties, the Eagles were two men short for more than a minute, but Foster scored on a break and with the short-handed goal the period ended at 6-1. Playing with the lead, the Eagles added two more goals in the third period as Boyer and Guinto scored around a goal by Kingsways' Gifford to close out the scoring at 8-2, and give the Eagles their most impressive win.
