Mike Duczkowski, Dominic Fiandra and John Lomonaco scored two goals each and Tom Davidson added a goal and three assists as Washington Township held off a late charging Highland team 8-5 in Tier 2 action played at the new Vineland Ice Arena on Monday night. Township scored five goals in the opening period, most on odd-man rushes utilizing their speed to create numerous scoring chances. The first coming in the games opening minute as Duczkowski broke in all alone, and after the initial save was made, Fiandra skating down the right wing jammed home the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
One minute later Jason Pelle one-timed a pass from Chris Keyser, again on an odd-man rush and after two minutes it was 2-0. Right after the face-off, Fiandra flew into the zone and after the initial stop, Davidson pounced on the rebound and it was 3-0. After Highland made it 3-1, Lomonaco scored two goals, both on breakaways and after one it was 5-1. Andrew Trapani scored a short-handed to bring Highland to within 5-2. But goals by Duczkowski and Fiandra sandwiched around a Justin Palmer goal still had Highland trailing 7-3 after two periods. Goals by Robbie Cross and Jim Therford for Highland early in the third gave them some life but Duczkowski sealed the deal and Township skated away with the 8-5 win.
