Eric Marano netted a hat trick with three third period goals to brake open a close game as Washington Township beat Shawnee 7-2 in game one of the semi-finals played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. Township controlled much of the play in the first period and jumped out early as Marano intercepted a clearing pass and scored unassisted to give Township a 1-0 lead forty-nine seconds into the game. Shawnee goalie Jeff Sutphin played spectacular in the period stopping thirteen of fourteen shots. Although Shawnee could only generate three shots in the period, Jordan Kudatzky's power play goal tied the score at 1-1.
Early in the second period Pete Laman broke in and beat Sutphin through the five hole to give Township a 2-1 lead. But moments later Shawnee was down a man and Matt Wolfe stole the puck after Adam Sezcech made the initial save. Wolfe deposited his own rebound to tie the game at 2-2. With Township on the power play, Buddy Anderson fed Marano who was stoned by Sutphin, but Drew Peterson jumped on the rebound and his goal gave Township a 3-2 lead.
Late in the period Shawnee had a chance to tie the game on the power play but Adam Zaccaria jumped on a loose puck and scored shorthanded and the lead grew to 4-2. Two goals by Marano and one by Anderson in the third period made the final 7-2, but Shawnee played Township even until late in the second period. It is hard to imagine Shawnee playing any better but they definitely have Township's attention.
