High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 29, 1999
By Mike Costantino Six different players scored for Washington Township as they skated by Holy Cross 7-1 in a SJHSIHL game contested at Hollydell on Friday night. After spotting Holy Cross a 1-0 lead on a soft goal scored from about fifty feet in the first minute of the game, Township would dominate for the next forty-four minutes. The Minutemen would fire sixty-three shots on goal to just seven for the Lancers, and if not for the outstanding and courageous play of Holy Cross goaltender Brian Holland, the score would have been a lot worse. Derek Poletis tied the score at 1-1 on a nice set-up from Joe Pelle and Chris Andrews and the same trio would hook up for the lead goal as Township led 2-1 heading into the middle stanza. Joe Gori would increase Township's lead with just over eight minutes left in the second period with the assist to Eric Marano and it was 3-1. With Holy Cross on the power play and a chance to cut the lead, Marano was sent in on a breakaway by Nick Brown and the shorthanded goal made it 4-1. Township seemed to spend most of the game in the Holy Cross end as Coach Harrington is getting balanced scoring from all his lines. Mike Mazzucca scored the fifth goal for Township with Chris Harrington assisting and they headed into the third period up 5-1. Harrington and Bill Verdecchio would close out the scoring in the third period and the 7-1 final. Earlier I mentioned the courageous play of Brian Holland, who played after having buried his father, Glen Holland, earlier on Friday.
