High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, October 31, 1999
By Mike Costantino Highland and Washington Township skated to a 5-5 tie in a JVA Division game played at Hollydell on Sunday night. While most kids were out trick or treating, these teams were hitting and scoring in a well played game. Led by Jim Mayfield's two goals and two assists, Highland seemed on their way to victory until Joby Passanante scored a short-handed goal. His second of the game, Passanante scored with ninety seconds left in the game to lift Township. Justin Palmer gave Highland a 1-0 lead thirty seconds into the game. However, less than a minute later, Mike Murro tied the score with assists going to John Spallino and Dan Hill. Passanante would score his first of two goals to give the Minutemen their first lead at 2-1. Highland would respond scoring the next two goals. The last one was short-handed and the Tartans took a 3-2 lead into the second period. Spallino would tie the score at 3-3 on a feed from Murro and Jason Pelle. On the power play in the final minute, Township took the lead as Ian Potter scored with Andrew Peterson assisting and it was 4-3. Mayfield would tie the game as he scored an unassisted short-handed goal and it was 4-4. Palmer scored his second of the game also short-handed and Highland led 5-4. When Highland went on the power play in the last two minutes of the game, momentum would seem to be on their side. But Passanante came through with his own treat, and on this Halloween night both teams went home with a well-deserved point.
