High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 21, 2000
By Mike Costantino Joe Gori had two goals and two assists, while Buddy Anderson and Joe Pelle each scored twice to lead Washington Township to an 8-1 victory over Cinnaminson in a SJHSIHL semi-final game played in Pennsauken on Monday night. Gori opened the scoring five minutes into the game as he blasted a shot from the blue line and by game one star Scott Gideon and it was 1-0. One minute later on a delayed penalty call, Eric Marano skated in and beat Gideon to make it 2-0, Chris Harrington and Pelle assisting. Exactly two minutes later Nick Martorano sped up and, on a pass from Gori, scored Townships' third goal and the period would end at 3-0. Cinnaminson went on the power play early in the second period, but it was Township that capitalized as Anderson used high speed to break in and his short-handed goal made it 4-0. It was deja vu all over again as Anderson scored his second short-handed goal of the game and the lead grew to 5-0. Pelle would then score the next two goals, first with five seconds remaining in the second period and then in the first minute of the third and Township was in control at 7-0. This young and improving Cinnaminson team finally broke through at the eight minute mark as Bill DeVece spoiled the shutout for Kevin Ciccone to make it 7-1. Gori closed out the scoring in the last minute and with the 8-1 win, Township will face Clearview for the title. Hats off to Cinnaminson who played hard and with just three players graduating, will be a team to watch next year. Photos by Art Redd
