High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, January 30, 2000
By Brian Weinstein Despite being decimated by the losses of both its leading scorer and captain, Cherry Hill West defeated talented and well-coached Washington Township 4-2 on Sunday at Hollydell. Having only the remnants of its original team from the start of the season, Cherry Hill opened up to an early 2-0 first period lead behind the scoring of Carusi Middle School's academic scholar and athlete, Chris Stevenson, and West freshman, Derek Lapinski, who scored on a slapshot from center ice. Township fought back to tie the game 2-2 with two nice goals from D. Tynan, which were both assisted by M. McKinney. The game went down to the wire, only to be decided by two late-game goals by defenseman Kevin Flowers, who put on a show for the fans with his two full-ice rushes reminiscent of Bobby Orr in his prime. The game ended with fan ovations and a cordial game-ending handshake between two teams who both deserved a win. Photos by Brian Weinstein
