High School Baseball: Friday, April 30, 1999
By Gary Steiner Williamstown pitcher Wayne Bumm seemed to get hotter as the night air got colder. He overcame some early difficulties on his way to a complete game win over the West Deptford Eagles, under the lights at Union Field in the first round of the Minuteman Tournament. Bumm was a little wild early on, but settled down for 11 strikeouts versus only two walks in the 12-6 victory. He also was hit on the hand by a line drive in the 3rd, but shook it off to strike out the next batter. First baseman Mike Malone went 3-4 for the Braves, while center fielder Mike Lynch was 3-4 for the Eagles. Three West Deptford pitchers combined to give up 10 walks, two of which were RBI walks in the 6th inning. The Braves might have scored more runs if they had not committed several base running mistakes. The victory sends the Braves to the Tournament Championship Game versus Pemberton, to be played tomorrow at 2:30 pm at Washington Township. The Eagles will play the host Minutemen in the Consolation Game at 11:00 am. Photos by Art Redd
