High School Ice Hockey: Friday, December 4, 1998
By Mike Costantino Washington Township's varsity ice hockey team skated to a 9-3 victory over Edgewood on Friday night at Hollydell Ice Rink. After spotting Edgewood a 2-0 lead in the first 5 minutes, Township finally got on the board on a power play as Joey Gori scored his first of three goals to make it 2-1. With the score tied at 2, Adam Zaccaria scored the first of his 2 goals of the night and Township had its first lead at 3-2. However, Edgewood would tie the score less than 2 minutes later at 3-3. The way goals were being scored it looked as if the first team to 10 would be the winner, but Coach Harrington's defense along with goalie Brian Migliorisi stepped up and shut out Edgewood the rest of the way. Captain Derek Poletis scored the eventual game winner at the 4 minute mark to make the score 4-3 . With the defense playing steady, led by Poletis, Chris Harrington and the pesky Joey Gori, Washington Township showed it's a team that should be one of the favorites to win the title. Next up for the Minutemen is a home game at Hollydell on Friday night December 11 against Cherry Hill West at 7:15 pm, and a rematch on Monday December 14 at the Coliseum at 7:00 pm. With the high school football season over for now, high school hockey is growing in the community and these kids could use the same support we give our football teams.
