High School Ice Hockey: Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998
By Rick Murro After a furious, physical but scoreless 1st period the Washington Township JVB Ice Hockey Club went on to defeat the Shawnee Renegades by a score of 4 to 1, capturing 1st place in the SJHSIHL JVB Division. Township goals were scored by #65 Eric Marano at 10:28 of the 2nd period, assisted by #9 captain Scott Singer. #35 Mike Mazzuca scored Township's 2nd goal of the period with the assist coming again from #9 Scott Singer. During this fast paced penalty filled period 2 goals were disallowed due to a too many men on the ice delayed call and a questionable crease violation. The 3rd period saw outstanding play by forwards Chris Andrews and defensemen Eric Ricacho and Josh Ogin. Ogin literally saved 2 breakaway chances by Shawnee with some brilliant defensive play. Chris Andrews and captain Scott Singer kept Shawnee off balance all evening with tenecious forechecking. In the 3rd and final period Township's Mike Mazzuca had to leave the game due to a slight concussion but not before putting his JVB squad ahead on a pretty backhander at 14:40 of the 3rd and final period. Defensive standout Dan Fratantoro finished off the scoring and Shawnee with a goal with 4:30 remaining in the 3rd assisted by Eric Ricacho. Mark Buckalew was in net for Township and gave up 1 goal on 10 shots. Congratulations to coach Steve Brown and his team on capturing the Division and good luck in the playoffs. This win gives them a bye in the Playoff quarterfinals. Washington Township JVB semifinal playoff game is Sunday, February 22nd, at Holydell Ice Rink. Time to be determined (probably late afternoon/early evening).
