Dave Orlando scored short-handed with four minutes remaining in the game as Garnet Valley defeated Shawnee 3-2 in first round action of the Flyers Cup. After a sluggish first period that ended in a 1-1 tie, Shawnee took its only lead of the game as Joe Pezzato scored on a great pass from Matt McDonald for a 2-1 lead at the seven minute mark. That lead lasted less than ninety seconds as Jake Pilarski scored for Garnet Valley to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the final period.
Shawnee had two power play opportunities in the third period, capitalizing on neither and then giving up a breakaway for the game winner. Despite being ranked #3 in their bracket Shawnee came out flat in the first period and despite being out-shot 17-5, were in the game thanks to goalie Paul Gray whose brilliant season came to an end. Garnet Valley seemed to outwork Shawnee and also outdraw them fan wise as a large portion of the crowd made the trip to cheer on their team. Notes: At the risk of repeating myself, it doesn’t seem to mean as much to the South Jersey teams that making the Flyers Cup is a priority as in years past, so why do we bother?
