The fans had to be thankful for the nice weather they were finally enjoying this week. The warm temperatures and sunny skies made it easy to watch the extra inning championship game played at Eastern High School. For eight entertaining innings, Pennsville's Jamie Carlson and Haddon Heights' Michelle Schlichtig were masterful on the mound for their teams keeping a scoreless game until the bottom of the eighth inning. Casey Bradford would deliver a two out triple scoring Lauren Brewster to take home the championship title.
Early on in this game, Haddon Heights had the momentum behind the pitching and bat of starting pitcher Michelle Schlichtig. Her two out triple in the top of the first inning looked as if Heights would take that early and important lead. But she was stranded on base to end the inning. When Schlichtig took the mound, she dominated the Lady Eagles striking out the sides through the first 3 innings.
Pennsville put their threat in the fourth inning when Bradford was at the plate batted Schlichtig for ten pitches. Finally, she drew the walk and moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. When Pennsville's designated hitter Heather Hogate delivered a single to center, Bradford was rounding third when centerfielder Kelley Murphy's throw was in time to catcher Melissa Mitchell.
After Haddon Heights failed to score in the top of the eighth inning, Brewster got things started delivering a one out single down the third base line. Schlichtig struck out the next batter and it looked as if this game would be extended another inning. But Casey Bradford wasted little time connecting on the first pitch she saw over the centerfielder's head for a triple and the South Jersey Group 1 Championship Title.
