There had to be a sigh of relief coming from the Pennsauken Indians Saturday afternoon. New head coach Reggie Lawrence finally showed the hometown fans that his system does work. The offense got a slow start, but it was the second quarter second scoring drive that put all the plays together for the Indians. On that drive, quarterback Russell Love engineered a scoring drive that was capped off with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Nate Taylor. The Indians defense held Rancocas Valley scoreless that gave Pennsauken the 45-0 victory at home.
When you’re faced with some key injuries trying replacing the wholes that were made due to graduation, the new starting player will either shine in the spotlight or be left dazed and confused. Either way, it’s a learning experience that hopefully that player will remember for the weeks to come. The Red Devils were looking not only looking to score their first points of the season, but also trying to stop their opposing offenses from scoring points. The Indians, also starting off with a lost to Washington Township, were looking to play well on both sides of the playing field.
After Love gave Pennsauken the lead in the first quarter on his 27-yard field goal, he watched teammate Matt Wilson rip off a 55-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that gave the home crowd a lot to cheer about. Their next score demonstrated their ability to move the ball giving the Indians the 16-0 lead. Add the play of the special teams and defense, Pennsauken put together a well-rounded victory. Steve Roberts interception in the second quarter and Wilson’s second score on a 95 yard kickoff return in the third put this game out of reach. Robert Darby would add a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter and William Brown finished the scoring with his 38 yard score in the final quarter.
