Taylor Facchinei scored with just under three minutes remaining in double overtime as Paul VI defeated Cherry Hill East 7-6 in exciting playoff action at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel on Monday night. The loss ended the season for Cherry Hill East, Paul VI moves on to face Cherokee 2, a team that beat them earlier in the double elimination tournament. The game was a seesaw affair, with Paul VI controlling the first period scoring two power play goals, with senior forward Rich Ferro involved in both.
First Ferro converted a pass from Jared Brasten at the seven minute mark to put Paul VI up 1-0, and then Ferro returned the favor as Brasten scored with Cherry Hill down two men with just under two minutes left in the period. Eights were wild in the second period as the teams combined for eight goals and eight penalties. After Andrew Roth and Tim Woods tied the game for Cherry Hill at 2-2, Paul VI scored three goals in less than two minutes to seemingly take a 5-2 lead. But Cherry Hill stormed back with three goals in the last four minutes of the period to tie the score at 5-5 going into the third period.
It looked as if Cherry Hill was going to advance as they took a 6-5 lead with three minutes left in the third period on a goal by Jared Annerelli. But Zack Booth tied the score with fifty seconds left, lifting a shot just under the crossbar. The first overtime both teams were cautious, not wanting to make a mistake or get caught on an odd-man rush and each team only managed two shots on net. Then with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, Chris Sutherland threw the puck out front and Facchinei was able to slide it in along the ice and Paul VI survived.
