Mike DiGennaro scored three goals and Zach Booth added two goals as Paul VI came back from a 5-3 deficit to defeat Timber Creek 8-6 in the regular season finale for both teams. Danny Cavallaro had a hat trick for Timber Creek and Lanny Frederick added two goals as Timber Creek took advantage of a five-minute major penalty to go from trailing 3-2 to leading at 5-3. Timber Creek dominated the first period with 17 shots but their lone goal was scored by Cavallaro. DiGennaro and Rich Ferro scored goals for Paul VI as they led 2-1 thanks in large part to Eric Lake.
After Frederick scored a short-handed goal to tie the game at 2-2 early in the second period, DiGennaro was sent in on a great pass by Brett Balco as he drew the defenseman over and slid the puck to DiGennaro who had an empty net to shoot at and Paul VI led 3-2. Timber Creek would score the next three goals as Matt Carpenter, Frederick and Cavallaro capitalized on the major penalty. Dustin Isbert cut the lead to 5-4 scoring a goal from in tight. Then on the power play Adam Cantiello tied the game as Balco again on an odd-man rush drew the defense over and found Cantiello. Cavallaro untied the game scoring on a break in the final minute of the period. Booth then tied the game on the power play as his back-hander found the short side. Then with Timber Creek on the power play, Booth stole the puck and scored short-handed as Paul VI took the lead at 7-6. DiGennaro added a late goal as Paul VI escaped with an 8-6 win. These teams will battle again next week in the opening round of the playoffs and it should be entertaining.
