High School Boys Basketball: Thursday, February 10, 2000
By Stu Barnes Five weeks ago, the Overbrook Rams men's basketball team easily defeated their rivals, the Edgewood Eagles, 72-48. The second time around, the Rams had to fight a 15-point deficit and hit two free throws with less then 3 seconds left on the clock to win the game. With the 2-point win, the Rams still have a chance to win the conference. The game started off all Edgewood as the Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead. At the half, the Eagles still had a 9-point lead led by Jason Sapp and Anthony Miles. With the game tied at 46, Overbrook had the ball and was looking to pass inside to Jamar Smith, but Edgewood played great defense and made Overbrook take a shot from the outside with 5 seconds left. The ball seemed to be touched by 4 different players. Smith ended up with the ball and was fouled with 2.3 seconds left in the game. Smith was 2 for 9 from the line so far in the game. Smith made both to give Overbrook a 2-point lead 48-46. Edgewood called time out and set up a play to try and send the game into overtime. The play was set up nicely, but two players caught the pass and then let go at the same time. The ball bounced out of bounds. The game was over, and Overbrook had survived a tough battle against the Edgewood Eagles. Jamar Smith led all scoring with 25 points. Also for Overbrook were Rory Klein 9, John Goloszewski 6, Tim Jefferson 4, Russell Eaddy 2, and DeWhite Pitts 2. Edgewood was led by Butch Maglioro and Antray Miles, both with 14 points, followed by Jason Sapp 10, Roger Brown 3, Anthony Miles 3, and Joe Banks 2.
