Ocean City and Moorestown played as hard as they could for as long as they could in their State 3 semi-finals game at Highland High School. After neither team could score in regulation or the overtime period, it was a shame that either team had to lose this defensive battle. Both of these teams had not lost a single game this season until today. Ocean City (22-0-1) keeper Gwen Hunter kept all three shot attempts from entering the cage by the Lady Quakers to preserve a 3-0 penalty shot victory.
Let's take a look at the success of both of these field hockey teams. The Lady Red Raiders were impressive shutting out every team they faced to capture the South Jersey Group 3 title over the third seeded Lacey Twp. It was their fourth title in the past 5 years they made it to the finals. Moorestown (18-1-1) has also become a familiar team in the group championship. The Lady Quakers captured this year's Central Group 3 crown by defeating the third seeded Wall Twp. They have won four group titles in the past 5 years.
Both teams were unsuccessful in their first penalty shot as both keepers made it seem as if this was not going to resolve the situation. But when Ariana Keelman finally saw that unfamiliar site of the ball entering the cage, Ocean City had no other choice but to celebrate the successful shot. They would continue with that feeling of relief as their next two shots by Kelsey Nickles and Leslie Robinson repeated Kleeman's initial performance during the shootout.
