High School Basketball: Saturday, February 11, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It takes the game of basketball to bring out the awareness that help is needed financially for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia fight against childhood cancers. There was plenty of basketball being played at the Cape-Atlantic Challenge held at Timber Creek to help the "Shoot Down Cancer Foundation, Inc." This year's event featured some very intriguing games including match-ups between several top 20 teams. So when the Red Raiders from Ocean City competed against Camden Catholic, it was an opportunity to attend a high school basketball game for a good cause. A slow start by Ocean City proved to be the difference in their 50-41 defeat to Camden Catholic. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, November 12, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty The Red Raiders from Ocean City have been in this situation so many times you would think that they have gotten use to all of the pressure. For the past nine years, the field hockey team has made it to the finals of the South Jersey Group III tournament. They have won their last three titles as the number one seed and loss three as the lower seed. The last time the Red Raiders won the sectional title not sitting in the top spot was seven years ago. Back as the highest seed in a bracket, Kingsway was back as the number two seed looking to defend their two year reign. Ocean City had come up on the short end of those games, but this year would be different. In the second overtime period, Melissa Hunter's goal minutes into the session would return the title back to Ocean City. |
High School Soccer: Friday, November 11, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Maybe there was a bit of pressure on the number one seeded team in this year's South Jersey Group III boy's soccer title game. Not knowing what to expect from eleventh seeded Lacey Township, the Ocean City boy's soccer team were playing back on their heels waiting for something to happen. Lacey Township were the surprise team this year defeating the higher seeded teams which allowed them at a chance to pick up the group title and also defeat what many has considered the best team in South Jersey. For one entire half, the two teams were unable to score a goal, but the second half was a different story as the Red Raiders ripped off five unanswered goals to claim the title. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 9, 2005 By Susan Hall It was down to just four teams remaining and all were looking to advance to the South Jersey Group III field hockey finals. Ocean City, Kingsway, Cumberland and Hammonton all were competing today to advance to the finals. In Ocean City, the number one seeded Red Raiders were hosting fifth seeded Hammonton to earn a chance at the title against second seeded Kingsway who defeated third seeded Cumberland. Ocean City would get three goals from three different players and goal keeper Devon Seifert would earn the shutout for the Red Raiders. |
High School Soccer: Tuesday, November 8, 2005 By Jerome Michaels This past season has been an impressive accomplishment for the boy's soccer team from Highland. At the beginning of the season, most would not have considered the Tartans as one of the top teams in the area. Mike Cullen, Joe Cullen and Tony LaVigna have led Highland deep into this year's South Jersey Group III semi-finals game with high hopes of making it to the title game. One team standing in the way were the number one seeded Red Raiders from Ocean City. Most have considered them the number one team in South Jersey and with Rafael Duarte, Kyle Evans and Pat Tolomeo leading the way, there's a reason why they are so good. The Red Raiders completely controlled this game from beginning to end and advanced to the finals with a 6-1 victory over Highland. |
High School Lacrosse: Friday, May 6, 2005 By Joyce Sagerty This was a chance for Ocean City to prove that they could compete with a team with a winning record from another conference. The Red Raiders would play their host Minutemaids from Washington Township evenly for the first twenty-five minutes and were looking to maintain that intensity. The start of the second half was a different story as Mandy Silvesti scored three straight goals to put the Minutemaids one step ahead for the rest of this game. Silvesti would finish with five goals for Washington Township as they defeat Ocean City by a 13-9 margin. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, March 8, 2005 By Jerome Michaels Let there be no mistake that the Panthers from Camden High were ready to get back the title that they had own for so many years. What most thought that this would be another Camden-Woodrow Wilson classic battle on the hard court turned out to be a Cinderella story for Ocean City. The Red Devils from Ocean City boy’s basketball team were the ones responsible for Wilson not making it to the South Jersey Group 3 finals as they defeated them in overtime by a single point. But that story would turn out to being an expected ending for the Panthers as they claimed the title yet again in front of a capacity crowd at Eastern High School. Teron Murray along with Kevin Payton led the top seeded Panthers to a 70-42 victory over third seeded Ocean City. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, February 12, 2005 By Jerome Michaels The Olympic-Cape Challenge is back for another year of competition between the Cape-Atlantic League boy’s basketball teams against the Olympic Conference. One of those teams taking part of the challenge were the undefeated Renegades from Shawnee. This time held at Vineland High School, the fourth Olympic-Cape Challenge watched Ocean City and Shawnee open up their game tied after one quarter. From that point on, it was all Shawnee as they rolled on for the 66-49 victory during the fourth game of this challenge that benefits the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation. |
High School Soccer: Sunday, October 24, 2004 By Boog Williams In the first game of the Coaches Tournament semi-finals, #2 Cinnaminson defeated #10 Ocean City 3-2 on penalty kicks. After the first half ended 0-0, in which Ocean City had the better play of the game, the second half also ended 0-0. Cinnaminson had the better play of the game in the half, as the game went into overtime. |
High School Soccer: Saturday, October 9, 2004 By Jason Brown There are quiet a few good soccer teams in our area that has the talent and ability to win every game on their schedule. Most of the time, those teams can find a way to come together as a team to walk away with the victory. When it comes down to winning it all, it has been stated that offense wins games, but defense wins championships. So far this season, the boy's soccer team from Ocean City has demonstrated that they can play defense and has the ability of scoring goals. Four goals were scored against Cherry Hill East on Saturday and the defense did their part in preserving the 4-0 victory in a non-league game. |
