High School Ice Hockey:
Moorestown Continues to Roll with Win over Paul VI

Terry Brennan scored twice as Moorestown continued its winning ways with a convincing 6-1 victory over Paul VI in high school ice hockey action at the Igloo in Mt. Laurel. Brennan led a balanced attack as five different players scored for Moorestown. Paul VI in their final regular season appearance played well for the first ten minutes of the game, but frustration seem to grow as the game wore on. After Brennan scored at the three-minute mark on a nifty move along the left circle, Paul VI responded on the power play as Rich Ferro feathered a cross-ice pass to Dustin Isbert in front and his goal tied the score at 1-1. That was the extent of the offense for Paul VI despite eleven power play opportunities, they were only able to cash in once and that was the difference in the game.

Mike Furey gave Moorestown the lead for good responding less than thirty seconds after Paul VI had scored and Moorestown went into the second period with a 2-1lead. For the year, Moorestown has only trailed in two games heading into the second period and one was in their only loss to Cherry Hill East. Moorestown took a 3-1 lead on a nice give and go between Kevin Schaffer and Mike Furey as they broke in on a 2-on-1 and Furey slid the puck back to Schaffer after drawing the defenseman over and Schaffer re-directed the puck into the net. The remainder of the period Moorestown spent killing penalties, five altogether, with interference being the popular call of the night. Mike Weaver put the finishing touches on a dominant period for the penalty-kill squad as he scored a short-handed goal to put Moorestown ahead 4-1 after two periods. Goals by Brennan, on the power play and Mike Bodine closed out the scoring at 6-1.

Notes: Paul VI has about three weeks off now to prepare for the playoffs and work on the power play. Can anyone match three lines with Moorestown that will be the question as the tournament approaches?
