High School Soccer : Friday, November 13, 1998
By Art Redd There was a lot of action going on at Moorestown High School where the boy's soccer team was competing in the South Jersey Group 2 Finals. The Lady Quakers had earlier won the field hockey championship game against Hammonton 2-1. Now, the boys could cap the day off with Moorestown's second championship, this time against Haddon Heights. The Quakers were defending champions and were going for their second consecutive Group 2 title. It was a good day for Moorestown as they would add soccer to their records for capturing the Group 2 title with a 2-0 victory. The Haddon Heights Garnets got to the finals by defeating Woodstown, Gateway and Schalick. They were the underdogs in this game and determined to prove that they could compete with Moorestown. The first half of this game showed the defenses stepped up big and neither team giving too many chances to get a good shot on goal. The Quakers defeated Northern Burlington, Delran and Kingsway to get to host the Group 2 Championship game. The Garnets in the second half applied the pressure to try to gain the early lead. They were hustling to the ball to initiate some second half scoring. But it wasn't until 12:48 in the second half when Moorestown's Jason Dowiak, assisted by Brett Greene, scored the first goal of the game. Dowiak's goal was fired into the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Quakers struck again shortly after with Dowiak's second goal of the game, giving them the 2-0 win. Moorestown will face Hopewell Valley at Burlington County College in a Group 2 state semi-finals game on Monday. Photos by Art Redd
