High School Field Hockey: Friday, November 13, 1998
By Mike Costantino In the South Jersey Group 2 tournament field hockey finals, where the top seed played the second seed for the title, Moorestown held on for a 2-1 victory over visiting Hammonton. The Quakers scored the only goal in the first half at the 4 minute mark when Kristen Cahill scored on a penalty corner on a pass from Erica Rossi for the 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half Kelly Patrick scored what would turn out to be the winning goal at the 15 minute mark, with Marret Arfsten getting the assist and putting Moorestown up 2-0. With the game winding down, Hammonton scored its only goal at the 6 minute mark as Meredith Howell put in her own rebound to bring Hammonton within one goal at 2-1. Moorestown's defense shut down Hammonton the rest of the way and the Quakers had their first title since 1995. With this win, the Quakers now move to the state Group 2 semifinals where they will play Manasquan, the Central Jersey champion. Photos by Art Redd
