Edgewood Senior (9-0) defeated a strong Toms River South (5-4) Saturday in the opening round of the state football playoffs. The final score was 48-20. When the locals hit the field at the beginning of the game, they were greeted by over seventy signs painted by a group of their classmates that gave encouragement and wished them good luck.
In the opening sequence of plays, the Toms River Indians received the ball and took it down the field for a touchdown giving the team a big lift in the opening three minutes of play.
Then, when it was the Edgewood Eagles turn to get on offense, they showed the visiting team what a powerhouse they really were. Within minutes the Eagles had tied the score when the extra point was missed.
From there on, it was Eagles' football. While the Indians had a few players who ran the ball, the Eagles had a team full of players. The result was scoring, scoring, and more scoring.
Dennis Davis and Brandon Osborne both rushed for over 100 yards during the game. Davis scored four touchdowns and Osborne scored two. Also scoring was one touchdown was Andre Deramus.
On Saturday (November 18) the Eagles will play Ocean City at home. The game time has not yet been determined.
