High School Softball: Wednesday, May 17, 2000
By Cheryl Devito On Wednesday May 17, 2000, sister schools, Edgewood and Overbrook met on the Overbrook softball field for an Olympic Conference Patriot Division game. Both teams seemed determined, but the Lady Eagles came out on top and soared like they never have before. Excitement began in the second inning, as Kristin Wolf started Edgewood off with a double. A fly ball hit next by Jessica Walker was misplayed by the centerfielder, which advanced Wolf to third. On the next play, a fielder's choice, Krista McMahon was safe at first and Walker advanced to second. With bases loaded, Megan Murphy grounded to first to have a force play at home. Next up, Kate Wilhelm grounded to the pitcher to have another force out at the plate. The catcher, attempting a double play, threw the ball to the first baseman, who dropped it, which allowed McMahon to score. The inning ended with a strike out. In the fourth inning, Wolf again started off with a single. Walker captured first base on an error and McMahon grounded to the shortstop to get Wolf forced out at third. Murphy hit a grounder to have Walker forced out at third. Wilhelm came up and singled to score McMahon and a ground ball was hit to end the inning. Overbrook scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on two Edgewood errors. In the top of the seventh inning, Edgewood's first two batters had gotten out. With two outs, freshman Allison Green singled to right field. Dianna Henhaffer was hit by a pitch and Lindsay Creaney singled to right to score Green. The inning ended on a line drive to the shortstop. The Eagles held the Rams in the bottom of the seventh to leave the field with a 3 to 1 victory. Excellent defensive work was crucial to the win and was led by a spectacular pitching performance by Alexis Switenko. Edgewood and Overbrook will meet again next week, date to be announced, for their first game of the states and final match this season. Photos by Art Redd
