High School Tennis: Sunday, September 26, 1999
By Andrea Johnson This week proved to be very successful for the Edgewood Ladies Tennis Team. The first match on the books was Camden, which was an easy victory. Once Tuesday rolled around, we were ready to take on Palmyra, but once again the weather would not allow us to play the match. This is a big match for our coach, Mr. Mack, because his big brother is the coach of Palmyra and his niece plays number one singles. Thursday's match against Cherry Hill West was a real test. However, we were well prepared and won 5-0. Singles players Alexis Switenko and Kristin Wolf both won their matches in two sets. Erin Riley, third singles, was able to come out on top after a tough three set match. The first doubles team, Andrea Johnson and Beth Chisholm, were able to take the match in two sets. Jennifer Cooper and Michelle Hammersley, the second doubles team, also won their match in two sets. Still riding high after our big win on Thursday, we boarded the bus to head to Overbrook. This is how the matches ended against Overbrook: At first singles, Alexis Switenko of Edgewood defeated Overbrook's Nicole Lecuyer 6-0, 6-3. At second singles, Kristen Wolf of Edgewood defeated Overbrook's Jaime Roemer 6-3, 6-1. At third singles, Robin Scarvine of Overbrook defeated Edgewood's Cass Young 6-4, 7-5. At first doubles, the team of Beth Chisholm and Andrea Johnson defeated Overbrook's team of Christen Barney and Lindsay Rice 6-0, 7-5. At second doubles, the team of Michelle Hammersley and Jenn Cooper defeated Overbrook's team of Tracy Scardina and Kate Moncrief 6-2, 6-1. We took hold of our opportunities and were able to come up with our third win of the week. However, for most of the players, the week was not over quite yet. Two singles players and both doubles teams participated in the Camden County Invitational Tournament. The sun was shining as we took the courts on Saturday morning and it stayed that way until the day's matches were finished late Sunday afternoon. We were able to play against some great competition and picked up wins along the way. We all had a great time cheering each other on as we waited between matches. By the time Sunday's matches were complete each player played 4-5 matches. Photos by Boog Williams
