High School Tennis: Friday, October 9, 1998
By Andrea Johnson The Edgewood Ladies' Tennis Team has made a major turnaround from last season, somewhere in the neighborhood of three-hundred and sixty degrees. Under the wings of head coach Jeff Mack and assistant John Totoro, the ladies have been making a racket and winning matches. With the exception of two seniors last year, the team consisted of inexperienced freshmen. They were not able to match up against many of the teams in the division, and finished with a record of 3-15. This year looked bright with many returning sophomores and an incoming freshman. The varsity singles trio consists of newcomer Alexis Switenko, co-captain Erin Riley, and sophomore Kristin Wolf. Co-captain Andrea Johnson, sophomores Jennifer Cooper, Cassandra Young, and Beth Chisholm make up the varsity doubles teams. These seven players are backed by a supportive and challenging JV team. Working together with each other and coaches Mr. Mack and Mr. Totoro, the ladies have been able to improve their overall record to 9-3. Big wins for the team include matches against sister school Overbrook and a double win over Pennsauken. A few out of conference matches also proved to be successful with wins over Palmyra and Highland. When asked to describe the team and how the season has been so far, hard work seems to be the key. Five days a week the ladies hit the courts for a few hours of hard work after school whether it be for practice or a match. Togetherness is also a key ingredient in the formula of success. The ladies work together and push each other to be the best that they can be while not forgetting to have fun along the way. Photos by Boog Williams
