High School Field Hockey: Friday, September 25, 1998
By Pam Gargano This year's Edgewood Eagles field hockey team lives in the shadow of last year's experience. After advancing to the 2nd round of the state tournament, this young team is faced with great expectations. With the loss of seven seniors, the team looks towards the underclassmen to fill the void. The team is lead by 14 returning juniors, including captains Beckie Goobic, Pam Gargano, and Lisa Mohrmann. After a promising pre-season, the Eagles faced Washington Twp. In their first game of the season, Edgewood lost a hard fought game to the Minutemaids, 1-0. Game two looked like a definite win, but the Eagles came out flat, tying Paul VI, 1-1. Bethie Henhaffer scored Edgewood's first goal of the season. Finally, in the third game of the season, the Eagles played up to their potential. Dominating the game and the scoreboard, the Eagles surpassed a strong Williamstown team. Senior Ali Pires scored her first of the season, and sophomore Bethie Henhaffer scored her second. Goaltender Lisa Mohrmann recorded her first shutout. After the promising Williamstown game, Edgewood faced a tough Pennsauken squad. They faltered again, losing in the final minute and 20 seconds with a 2-1 count. Henhaffer scored her third of the season. The Eagles are looking towards Saturday's game against Eastern to get back into their winning ways. The Eagles need to forget about their 1-2-1 start, and focus on the rest of the season.
