High School Basketball: Friday, December 19, 1997
By Art Redd Washington Township went into Edgewood on opening day to follow their game plan which Coach Costa had scripted for them. Her team did exactly that and defeated the Eagles. Township had an extreme height advantage and dominated the boards on both ends. Tracey Ojeniyi and Amanda McCartney were unstoppable inside the paint. Washington Township went on a 15-0 run in the first quarter. Edgewood Lisa Mohmann finally got her team their first basket with 4:11 remaining in the quarter. The lead expanded for Washington Township when they apply the full court pressure. Edgewood had a difficult time getting the ball across the 10 second line. In the second quarter, the Eagles Sayra Minattee would use her ball handling skills to break the pressure. But Washington Township would get back on defense and shut down any inside scoring chances. Township was obviously working on a game plan and not the score. They continued creating turnovers into easy baskets. Halftime score had Township with a 40-9 lead. When the second half started, there was no change in the game plan for Coach Costa. Rancocas Valley was their next opponent and the players were getting extra time to practice their offense with the hugh lead they owned. Costa finally pulled her starters in the middle of the third quarter. Township had an easy time the rest of the way and cruised to the victory.
