Mike Purwin scored two goals in a span of two minutes midway through the third period as Eastern rallied to upset first place Clearview 5-3 giving Coach Pontonio an early Christmas present. Six of the eight goals scored in the game were a result of the Vikings power play. Clearview scored two goals, both by John Probe on shorthanded breakaways. The first one with Eastern having a two-man advantage, Probe stole the puck at center ice and skated in alone and beat goalie Dan Myers just under the crossbar.
Trailing 1-0, Eastern went on another power play at the five-minute mark, and again Probe broke in and beat Myers for a 2-0 lead. Moments later still on the power play, Adam Roy jammed home a rebound off a shot by Tom Fadako and the Vikings were within 2-1. Thirty seconds later after a giveaway by Eastern, Gunnar Fox made it 3-1 again on a break. Clearview had regained its two goal lead as the game headed into the second period.
Having given up two shorthanded goals, one wonders if given the chance Coach Pontonio would have declined the next penalty against Clearview. Fortunately for Eastern they were able to correct their problems and capitalized in the second period. The only goal in the period came on the power play. Donny Walls made it 3-2 with the assists going to Purwin and Anthony Orner.
That set the stage for Purwin in the third period, first scoring from the slot to tie the game at 3-3 and then scoring the game winner again on the power play. Purwin beat the goalie to a loose puck and slid it into the empty net. Ryan Sullivan added an insurance goal to wrap up the 5-3 victory.
