High School Volleyball: Eastern Boys Volleyball Captures Maruader Tournament Sunday, April 15, 2001 By John Daglian In the past, the Eastern Volleyball program has been known to travel anywhere in the state for a tournament. This year is no exception as just one week after hosting the Viking Invitational, Eastern traveled north to Stevens Institute of Technology for the Maruader Volleyball tournament. The tournament featured St. Josephs of Metuchen, currently ranked 2nd in the state, Memorial of West New York, ranked 5th, Clifton, ranked in the top 15 and host team St. Petes of Jersey City. During pool play, Eastern finished 3rd with a 4 4 record. They managed a split with Memorial and Clifton. They beat St. Petes in both games, but lost both games to St. Josephs. The playoffs featured Memorial against St. Josephs and Eastern against Clifton. This was a single game to 15 points. Memorial edged St. Josephs and Eastern downed Clifton 15 13. Thus Memorial and Eastern would get a rematch in the finals. After dropping the first game 13 15, Eastern rallied to win the match 15 11 and 15 10. This victory was Eastern?s first ever tournament win! |
