Adam Roy and Anthony Orner each scored three goals as Eastern opened its season by defeating Lenape 12-2 in the first varsity game played at the new Flyers Skate Zone. The Skate Zone replaces the Coliseum as one of the homes for the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League. Losing top players Cianfrani and Schellenhammer to graduation this should be a rebuilding year for the Vikings. But with an infusion of new blood and enthusiasm this team could surprise.
Eastern scored six goals in the first period and never looked back with Brian Schellenhammer converting a pass from Dave Warrington and the 1-0 lead. Warrington picked up a loose puck and scored on a breakaway and TJ Connoly was set-up by Mike Purwin and the lead grew to 3-0. After Lenape got one back, Eastern got goals from Warrington, Adam Roy and Brett Picciotti to take a 6-1 lead into the second period. In spite of missing top scorer Mike Becker, the Vikings didn't miss a beat.
Lenape capitalized on some penalties and with a two-man advantage got to within 6-2. But that would be the end of the offense for Lenape. Two goals by Roy and one by Orner closed out the scoring and made it 9-2 heading into the third. Roy and Orner completed their hat tricks and Eastern skated away with the 12-2 victory.
