High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 17, 2000
By Mike Costantino Mike Becker and Mike Cianfrani each scored three goals, as Eastern skated past St. John Neumann 13-3 in a SJHSIHL game played at the Coliseum on Monday night. Marc Manara and Joe Jurkofsky added two goals each, as the Vikings blew open the game scoring seven goals in the third period. The lone bright spot for Neumann was Eddie Marker who accounted for all three of the Pirates' goals. Manara opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, as he rebounded a shot by Brett Piccotti. Five minutes later Becker made it 2-0 with Cianfrani and Drew Tait assisting. Jurkofsky scored ninety-seconds later with Lindsey Roy assisting and it was 3-0. After Marker cut the lead to 3-1, Jurkofsky scored with two minutes remaining in the period, again from Roy and Piccotti and it was 4-1. Marker scored again at the end of the period and the score was 4-2 heading into the second period. Cianfrani joined in the scoring in the first minute of the second period, using his speed to break up ice and skate around the defenders, and his goal made it 5-2. At the eight minute mark, Cianfrani notched his second goal to make it 6-2. Neumann did not get a shot on goal in the first nine minutes. Finally, when they did, Marker scored his third to make it 6-3 heading into the third period. Cianfrani completed his hat trick early in the period and goals by Manara, Piccotti, Esfahani, Adam Roy and two by Becker closed out the scoring at 13-3. One other item to mention is that with her three assists, Lindsey Roy earned her playmaking patch. This was quite an accomplishment for a young lady in her final varsity appearance.
