Right from the opening whistle indicating the start of this game, the Dragons from Kingsway kept the pressure on Matt Dicken. Early on, Dicken was able to keep the ball from crossing the goal line but it was only a matter of time before the Dragons found the back of the net. Kingsway would have their way in the second half expanding on their one goal lead after the half. Scoring a total of five goals, the defense was also rewarded with a shutout of the Spartans at Deptford High School.
These two teams from the Tri County Conference Royal Division have had their success last year with both Kingsway and Deptford advancing to the playoffs. Deptford would lose in the first round of the 2002 Group 3 brackets while Kingsway, in the same bracket, losing in the second round. Both teams were looking to have a better record going into the new season while they making the right adjustments after losing some key players this season.
The Dragons kept most of the play on Deptford’s side of the field during the initial minutes into this game. Dicken would come up with a few quick saves, but the Dragons would finally get the game’s first goal. Andrew Finger gave Kingsway a 1-0 lead with 22:30 showing on the game clock. That goal would give Deptford some life as they began to pick up their play in order to getting that one goal to tie the game. That one goal lead would hold up for one half and then increase in the second half. Andrew Kehoe, Nick Bergen, Brian Meddick and Sean Cunningham would all score and Kingsway walked away with the 5-0 victory.
