David Gooch and Ryan Arnold each scored two goals as Clearview beat Eastern 7-3 and advanced to the finals in the SJHSIHL. Clearview will defend its championship against arch rival Washington Township in a best of three series, with game one at Hollydell at 7:15 on Friday March 2nd. Clearview dominated the first period out shooting Eastern 15-2. If not for the play of net minder Mike Keppler, the Vikings would have faced a larger deficit.
John Gardner gave Clearview a 1-0 lead as he broke in with Tony DeSimone on a two-on-one and he deposited a nice pass from DeSimone to beat Keppler. It stayed that way until less than three minutes were left in the period. Gooch skated in, undressed the defense and went in all alone and went top shelf past a sliding Keppler to make it 2-0 after one period.
Right after the opening face-off, Clearview turned the puck over behind its own net. Anthony Orner fed Schellenhammer in the slot and his quick shot beat Jared Wiesenbach and just like that it was 2-1. Despite being out played and not having many scoring opportunities, Eastern was right back in the game. Clearview started playing undisciplined hockey and Eastern found itself with a two-man advantage and quickly capitalized. Mike Becker, again setup by Orner tied the game at 2-2 scoring right off the face-off. Clearview kept the pressure on and retook the lead midway through the period. Rob Coble blasted one from the point and after the initial save Arnold jumped on the rebound to give Clearview the lead for good at 3-2.
As they did in game one, Clearview took advantage on their power play chances scoring two more goals before the period expired. Goals by Joe Smith and Gooch took a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the third period. But unlike game one where they displayed discipline in not taking silly penalties, they gave Eastern numerous power play chances. They cannot do that against Township and expect to win. Third period goals by Mike Cargill and Arnold gave Clearview a 7-2 lead. Eastern's Ryan Janisewski closed out the scoring in the last minute and Eastern ended its season with a 7-3 loss.
