In a game that featured thirty- two penalties and one lecture, Clearview capitalized the most on their opportunities and beat Cherry Hill East 7-4 on Friday night at Hollydell. Clearview had two power play goals and three short-handed goals while three of the goals for East were on the power play. Midway through the third period, head referee Batley called both captains over and reminded them of their duties as captains and leaders. This tactic seemed to work, as there were few penalties after his lecture.
Matt Maggi opened the scoring on the power play giving East the early 1-0 lead. With a chance to increase their lead, East once again had the man advantage. But Dave Gooch went end-to-end and slid the puck across to Nick DeJesus who was all alone in the slot and his goal tied the game at 1-1. That's the way the first period ended.
Early in the second period, Mike Gooch skated in and went top shelf to give Clearview a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later Danyo tied the score at 2-2 for East. After Joe Smith gave Clearview a 3-2 lead at the eleven-minute mark, they added a power play goal. Dante Laspata had three opportunities in front of the net, depositing his third chance and Clearview led 4-2. East once again had a chance to move closer as they were on the power play in the final two minutes of the period, but Dave Gooch scored short-handed and heading into the third Clearview led 5-2.
East's failure to capitalize on numerous chances. Twice having a two-man advantage along with surrendering three short-handed goals were too much for the Cougars to overcome. Third period goals by Clearview's Ryan Arnold and Mike Gooch, and East's Sedacca and Chris Zizzamia made the final 7-4.
