High School Baseball: Wednesday, April 18, 2007 By Jerome Michaels Baseball is that game that for many teams, it takes awhile to get started. Players on the field and at the plate sometimes need a couple of innings to occur before they get a feel for the game. The advantage the starting pitcher may have would be opposing batters need to see a few pitches before getting locked in at the plate. One player who seemed to be locked in early was Dan McGuckin for the Eagles from Winslow Township. With his second hit of the game, McGuckin cleared the bases with a grand slam giving Winslow a big lead that Cherry Hill West could not recover from. Jason Gladden had plenty of run support and picked up the 9-3 victory on the mound for the Eagles. |
High School Ice Hockey: Wednesday, February 28, 2007 By Mike Costantino Bret Cybulski score two third period goals as Cherry Hill West rallied from a 3-0 deficit and defeated Holy Cross 4-3 and force a deciding game in the Tier 2 Championship. Holy Cross jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period on goals by Nick, Mullarkey, Matt Tamez and Mike Lukis but was shutout the rest of the way as goalie John Mehler stopped all 14 shots. Down 3-0 heading into the second period, Bill Berenato scored early to cut the lead to 3-1, and after Ryan Pierce cut the lead to 3-2 at the six minute mark, West was back in the game. Holy Cross could only manage three shots in the period and West had the momentum heading into the third period. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, February 6, 2007 By Jerome Michaels There has to be something said about a team who has loss their star player due to an injury right before the upcoming state’s basketball tournament. The Lions from Cherry Hill West would have to find other ways of putting points on the scoreboard after senior guard Ian Davis broke his right hand last week. After losing their first meeting to Timber Creek about a month ago, Cherry Hill West would jump out to a six point halftime lead in front of their hometown fans. Both teams struggled to convert on their scoring chances during the first half, but it would be the Chargers who would start the third quarter and take their first lead of the game. That momentum would be enough for Timber Creek to come away with a 43-40 victory. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 By Jerome Michaels It was a basketball tournament that both Cherry Hill boys' basketball teams had a chance to reach the finals. Competing against the Thunderbolts from Millville in the Virginia Whitaker Classic tournament held at Cherry Hill East, Cherry Hill West's early lead had diminished against Millville. Ian Davis' effort down the stretch helped the Lions go ahead for good. The defense would pick up helping West preserve their 68-63 win and advance to the tournament finals against Cherry Hill East. |
High School Field Hockey: Wednesday, November 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The seedings listed Cherokee as the underdog in their game against the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. This semi-finals girls' Central Jersey Group IV playoff game gave the Chiefs more than enough reasons to prove that they were a lot better than their regular season record had indicated. The eighth seeded Chiefs surprised Cherry Hill West by taking a three goal lead at halftime leaving the fifth seeded Lions in search of a second half comeback. Cherokee would continue to stay ahead in this game and advance to the sectional finals with their 4-1 victory. Liz Fox scored twice for the Chiefs and now move into the sectional finals against Rancocas Valley. |
High School Soccer: Monday, October 30, 2006 By Susan Hall It was the second time this season that these two teams competed against one another but this time it was a bit difference. This was the opening round of the South Jersey Group IV girls' soccer tournament and the ninth seeded Thunderbolts were trying to upset the eight seeded Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. The winner would advance to the next round against the top seeded Vikings from Eastern. Millville would adjust nicely from their defeat to Cherry Hill West earlier in the season, but the Lions still had an answer and that was defense. Arielle Caldas goal was the only goal needed as Cherry Hill West advanced to the next round with their 2-0 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 21, 2006 By Susan Hall With the official pairings for the upcoming postseason playoffs being released on Monday, two teams would get a chance to use today's game as a tune up to the beginning of the NJSIAA field hockey tournament. The Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and the Lady Irish from Camden Catholic both have clinched a position for the post season and had the opportunity to compete in a regular season game. The defense for Camden Catholic was able to keep the Lions off the scoreboard allowing the offense to put the only points on the scoreboard. Michelle Vittese scored two goals for the Irish helping the team to post the 4-0 win. Jess Pandola earned the shutout in goal for Camden Catholic. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, October 16, 2006 By Mike Costantino Bret Cybulski, Billy Berenato and DJ Nork each scored two goals as Cherry Hill West defeated West Deptford 8-3 in Tier 2 action played on Monday night at the Skate Zone. Luke DeHart scored twice for West Deptford. West got contributions both on the power play, connecting three times and once scoring a shorthanded goal. Nork got things going in the opening two minutes, with West Deptford already down a man, his quick shot caught Evan Betz off guard and West led 1-0. The with West Deptford down 2 men, Monahan converted a pass from Cybulski for a 2-0 lead, then right before the second penalty expired, Cybulski fed Monahan and the lead was 3-0. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, September 28, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It was a classic rivalry between East versus West, Cougars against Lions, Cherry Hill battling Cherry Hill. Fore the entire game played at Cherry Hill East High School, both teams had their chances of being the field hockey squad that could have come away with the victory. Both of these teams worked hard toward proving who the better team was on this day. Then it happened, the Cougars would get that goal that would decide the game from Stephanie Scarpa. East would be able to hold onto that lead and pick up the win. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, September 9, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty The Minutemaids started out this game as if they were rushing out of the doors on the last day of school. But this was the season opener and Washington Township showed that they were ready to play. Standing in their way were the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West. Township took full advantage of their corner opportunities and took a 3-0 lead during the first half. The Lions would respond early during the second half, but this day would belong to the Minutemaids. Sherri Fort and Megan Scarpinato both scored two goals apiece and Washington Township would reward themselves with a 5-1 victory in Olympic Conference play. |
High School Football: Friday, September 8, 2006 By Jerome Michaels Every team needs it and it's priceless when a team has the opportunity to us it. Geoffrey Mock, junior runningback for Timber Creek, was able to use his speed and quickness to elusively make something happen when the play didn’t go as planned. On the first day of a brand new high school football season, the Chargers from Timber Creek were hosting the Lions from Cherry Hill West. On each of his three touchdowns scored during the first half, Mock's ability to find his way around the Lions' defense and allow his speed to do the rest. Timber Creek would pick up the opening night victory by outscoring Cherry Hill West 19-0 in a Burlington/Olympic Conference matchup. |
High School Soccer: Friday, September 8, 2006 By Susan Hall It was a game that both teams started out knowing that they could win this game. That's a common feeling when teams play on the first day of the season. So when the Thunderbolts girl's soccer team from Millville traveled to Cherry Hill West to take on the Lady Lions, the Lions did their best to protect their home field advantage. Jen Carey scored the first goal of the game for Cherry Hill West and led at the break by two. The Lions would score twice in the second half and Cherry Hill West opened their season with a 4-0 victory. |
High School Lacrosse: Thursday, April 20, 2006 By Clark Washington Two teams from different divisions were looking to pick an all important win. So far this season, the Patriot division has several teams all within a win or two of becoming the top team. The Lions from Cherry Hill West is in the thick of things and they were looking to pick up some momentum at home against the Indians from Lenape. Both of these teams are chasing division leaders who have demonstrated the ability to score plenty of goals, but this game would decided by Lenape during the second quarter. Scott Calmey would score two of his three goals before the half helping Lenape shutout Cherry Hill West by a 4-0 score. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 18, 2006 By Susan Hall Even before the first pitch was thrown by the opposing team, the coaching staff had already gone over which player or players have the potential of making a big difference in a game. So when a player surprisingly comes through with a big hit, add another player on the must watched list. Whether it really was a big surprise to the other players on Seneca's softball team, Kim Narkiewicz crushed two home runs to dead center field highlighting the Golden Eagles 7-2 win at Cherry Hill West. |
High School Baseball: Saturday, April 15, 2006 By Stu Franklin So far this season, the high school baseball season has seen its share of upsets leaving those who follow the game wondering if every game will be a difficult one. The good teams will easily put a loss behind them and take the season one game at a time. Others may find it hard to shake off a disappointing loss. In a non-league game played at Cherry Hill West, the visiting Blue Devils from Burlington had a couple of one run games that didn't go their way and the other that did. With their 7-4 victory over the Lions, Cherry Hill West evened their record to three wins and three losses. |
High School Softball: Tuesday, April 4, 2006 By Susan Hall It's always nice to get that first win of the season and both Lindenwold and Cherry Hill West were looking for during their second game of the season. Shaina Bradley would get the start on the mound for the Lady Lions from Cherry Hill West and she would get plenty of support. Kelly Smith would give Bradley an early lead when she hit her homerun early in the non-league softball game. The Lions would score all of their runs they would need during the first three innings. Cherry Hill West would pick up the 14-1 victory and even their record to keep pace in the Olympic Conference Patriot Division. |
High School Lacrosse: Saturday, April 1, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty A few weeks ago you could find players outdoor taking part of practices in anticipation of making the team. One of those sports would be the growing popularity of lacrosse. With more and more high schools establishing lacrosse teams in South Jersey, it can only benefit from the attention it’s getting. For Camden Catholic and Cherry Hill West who were starting off the season participating in an inter conference girls’ lacrosse team, it would be a chance for these two established squads to begin their season with victory. Midfielder Jessica Falcone would start the season off right by scoring five goals for Camden Catholic and the Lady Irish would pick up the 18-8 win at home against Cherry Hill West. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, November 7, 2005 By Mike Costantino Cory Jackmuff had a hat trick and Evan Betz had a strong game in goal as West Deptford defeated Cherry Hill West 7-2 in Tier II action played at the Skate Zone in Voorhees on Monday night. West Deptford took control early scoring two goals in the first period as Matthew Bennet and William Baker Jr. both scored their second goal of the season. Cherry Hill got one back early in the second period as Justin Hoch found Brett Cybulski in the slot to make it 2-1. Jackmuff then scored the next two goals, first on a blast from the top of the circle and then on a short-handed breakaway to put West Deptford up 4-1. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, October 27, 2005 By Susan Hall As the regular season winds down, it gives a team time to reflect on their season. Looking back on a few of those games, would the outcome of a game been different if the team ran their called play better? What ever the reason, field hockey is a game that’s played together as a single unit working towards a goal to win. This game between Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic was about two teams headed into the upcoming tournament. Cherry Hill West and Camden Catholic had the chance to get ready for the start of the state tournament by giving several players a chance to play more minutes. Today, these two teams could not decide a winner as the two ended in a scoreless tie. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 15, 2005 By Susan Hall The month of October has a few indications that things are about to change in our area. The color of the leaves began to switch into fall mode, the temperatures drop a few degrees and the cutoff for making the post season can change a team’s hopes of making their run towards the states. Two teams that not only share the same town name, but also share that winning attitude as the first time they met last month neither team could decide a winner. Cherry Hill West was hosting Cherry Hill West in an Olympic Conference cross city rivalry. With the game tie at one at the start of the second half, Krista Taylor would score off of a corner that eventually gave the Lions the 2-1 victory over Cherry Hill West. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, October 6, 2005 By Jerome Michaels It was a physical game with two teams looking to take advantage with their finesse and speed. The Lenape boy’s soccer team traveled to Cherry Hill West trying to pick up their third win in a row against the Lions. Both of these teams did not possess that one dominate player that could single handedly take over a game, but they had players on the field that had the talent of scoring goals. In a very closely matched game, Jim Eveland would provide the eventual game winner against West and helped Lenape pick up the 2-0 victory. |
High School Field Hockey: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 By Susan Hall When the first day of the week begins, it's the time for teams to either build on or rebuild on their performance from the previous week. New adjustments are made to either refine the plays that worked or didn't work. What was working for the Lady Crusaders from Bishop Eustace was their success on the field. This time hosting Cherry Hill West, the Crusaders would start their week out picking up their second straight shutout. Three different players scored goals for Bishop Eustace as they posted a 3-0 victory over the Lady Lions. |
High School Soccer: Thursday, September 22, 2005 By Susan Hall So far this season, Cherry Hill West has done what most had thought the Lady Lions soccer team could do. That is to win those games they were supposed to win and remain competitive on the field. That effort has rewarded the Lions with a four game winning streak to open the season. No team should ever be considered as an easy team to beat because there will always be eleven players on the field working hard. Timber Creek was that team standing in the way of West picking up their fifth win of the season. Arielle Caldas was responsible for giving the Lions the early lead in this Olympic Conference game. Cherry Hill West would pick up the shutout as keeper Kristen De’Ambra preserved the 3-0 victory. |
