High School Softball: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 By Susan Hall You have to give a team credit for being able to score runs during the first time up at bat. Coaches and players do their best before a game starts to get themselves motivated for a game. When the Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East visited the Lady Hawks from Haddon Township, their early two run lead would hold up for six and a half innings. Haddon Township would battle back to tie this game during the bottom of the seventh and then win it in the eighth inning. Bridget Settles would score the winning run on a passed ball and the Hawks would walk away with the 3-2 victory. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, February 9, 2007 By Mike Costantino Andrew Michael scored the only goal of the game and Adam Wingate stopped all 18 shots as Clearview defeated Cherry Hill East 1-0 in the double elimination tournament at Hollydell on Friday night. After a scoreless first period, Michael put home a rebound of a shot by Tim Sullivan and that would turn out to be the only goal of the game. East did not generate many scoring opportunities but when they did Wingate was there to close the door. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 5, 2007 By Mike Costantino Frank Garvey and Justin Kinniry scored three goals each as Cherokee routed Cherry Hill East 11-0 in an opening round game in the double elimination tournament of the South Jersey High School Ice Hockey League. The score was only 2-0 after the first period as Cherokee got goals from Garvey and a short-handed goal from Brian Taylor. The lead grew to 5-0 after two periods as Kinniry, Garvey and Dan Weiner scored in a five minute span. Cherokee broke the game open in the third period as Kinniry, Garvey and Kyle Kovervas each scored three minutes apart early in the period. Kinniry, Kyle Manny and Angelo DiBattista also tallied for the Chiefs. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 29, 2007 By Mike Costantino Matt McDonald had three goals and an assist and fellow sophomores Joe Pezzato and Ryan Welsey also scored as Shawnee flew past Cherry Hill East 8-1 in the regular season finale for both teams. All three have been in the top ten in scoring and with McDonald's four point evening he will just edge out Washington Township's Colin Davis for the overall scoring leader. At the beginning of the season this looked to be a rebuilding year for Shawnee as they skate 17 underclassmen, but the emergence of these sophomores along with the outstanding performance turned in by goalie Paul Gray led them to a 16-1-1 record, and the top seed and favorite in the double elimination tournament. |
High School Basketball: Thursday, January 11, 2007 By Susan Hall In the world of sports, people are always making predictions on the outcome of a particular game. On the high school level, fans of the game analyze their reasons why the finals score of the game will be determined by their supporting facts. Players on the court do their best to ignore all of the predictions and try to concentrate on playing the game. In an Olympic Conference American Division girls' basketball game between Cherry Hill East traveling to Pennsuaken, Vianca Tajeda would help the Lady Cougars determine the outcome of this game with her effort on the court. Tajeda not only sent this game into overtime with a buzzer-beater three pointer, the Cougars would also rally around her and secure a 67-63 double overtime win over Pennsauken. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 By Jerome Michaels With the start of a new basketball season, expectations are usually high for every team that steps out on the court. There are those teams that many did not rank them as one of the elites, but that doesn't stop the players from competing in a sport that they love to play. Cory Gosik was one of those players connecting on nine three points for the Cougars from Cherry Hill East in a game played against Northern Burlington. The Cougars would hold off a late rally and post a 53-51 victory in a tournament competition. |
High School Basketball: Wednesday, December 27, 2006 By Jerome Michaels MaST Charter was a team that has started out the season slowly and knew it would be another test against the Lady Cougars. But for Cherry Hill East, they were also in search of their first win of the season. In a tournament hosted by Cherry Hill East, the Cougars had little problems putting points on the scoreboard against their opponent. Nine East players got their names listed on the scorer's sheet and an early double-digit lead resulted in an easy 73-28 victory. Vianca Tejada led the Cougars with 21 points. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, December 11, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Folkman scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead Cherry Hill East to a 6-3 win over Eastern. The victory was the first of the season for East after eleven straight losses. With a roster full of underclassmen the team should only get better. Folkman got the offense going as he scored less than a minute into the game. Torin Lawson responded about ninety seconds later scoring on a breakaway. Dan Drazen gave Eastern a 2-1 lead scoring a short-handed goal late in the period, but Folkman responded with a power play goal to tie the score at 2-2 after one period. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, November 2, 2006 By Stephanie Wright With the regular season coming to an end, there are a few regular season field hockey games that have to be played. The way this area has been experiencing unseasonable warm weather, players and fans of all ages didn't mind enjoying outdoor events. Today, the Cougars from Cherry Hill East traveled to Pennsauken to take on the Indians. The Cougars had secured a position in the postseason while Pennsauken was looking to end the season on a winning note. Cherry Hill East would control this game and during the final moments of the game, the Lady Cougars would celebrate their 2-1 victory. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, October 23, 2006 By Mike Costantino Justin Kinniry scored two goals and Doug Ball stopped all 20 shots as Cherokee defeated Cherry Hill East 4-0 in Tier 1 action played in Voorhees. After a scoreless first period, Kinniry got Cherokee going as he picked off an errant clearing pass in the East end and slid a backhander along the ice for 1-0 lead. The goal came in the middle of a Cherry Hill power play. Cherokee took advantage on their power play midway through the period as Tom Paradise scored with Zach McCarty getting the assist. Cherokee continued the offensive pressure, but East goalie Mike London made several great saves to keep his team close. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, October 9, 2006 By Mike Costantino Dan Drazen had three goals and two assists to lead the Eastern Vikings over Cherry Hill East 6-4 in Tier 1 action played at the Voorhees Skate Zone. Playing on a line with Torin Lawson and Derrick Schemmel, Drazen crated many scoring opportunities and set-up goals by Lawson and Schemmel. Eastern struck first as Drazen scored an unassisted goal ninety seconds into the game, and the Vikings carried the play for most of the period, out-shooting Cherry Hill 20-9. Jared Annarelli would tie the game midway through the period as he crated an opportunity down low and beat Evan Cohen. Eastern would regain the lead early in the second period as Lawson fed a pass from the slot to Drazen along the left circle and his quick shot found the net and it was 2-1. Moments later Cherry Hill responded on the power play as David Badecki put home the puck after a mad scramble in front of Cohen. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, October 6, 2006 By Mike Costantino Justin Osterdahl had a natural hat trick as Williamstown defeated Cherry Hill East 5-2 at Hollydell on Friday night. Osterdahl scored the only goal of the first period as Eric Finn hit him in stride streaking down the left side and Osterdahl went short-side for his first of three. Williamstown struck, capitalizing on the power play, as Osterdahl skated right up the slot and his blast made it 2-0. Forty seconds later, Osterdahl made it three in a row on a nice give and go play with Andrew Carusone. East showing some speed, but a young team as only twenty percent of the roster are seniors, finally responded as Evan Ascroff’s shot from the point beat Josh Haines, as he never saw the puck. Williamstown responded as defenseman Josh Haynes responded with a shot top shelf and the lead was 4-1. |
High School Field Hockey: Thursday, September 28, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It was a classic rivalry between East versus West, Cougars against Lions, Cherry Hill battling Cherry Hill. Fore the entire game played at Cherry Hill East High School, both teams had their chances of being the field hockey squad that could have come away with the victory. Both of these teams worked hard toward proving who the better team was on this day. Then it happened, the Cougars would get that goal that would decide the game from Stephanie Scarpa. East would be able to hold onto that lead and pick up the win. |
High School Lacrosse: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 By Stephanie Wright It's no secret that if you want to be the best, you must at least compete against the Lady Quakers from Moorestown. With so many players on the team that have the ability to score from anywhere on the field, a team must be able to match Moorestown's talent both offensively and defensively. The fifth seeded Lady Cougars from Cherry Hill East had just won a thrilling come from behind victory and were looking to continue that momentum against the top seed in the South Jersey Group A girls' lacrosse bracket. On this day, twelve different players for Moorestown would score at least a goal and the Quakers would advance to the finals with their 20-1 victory. Moorestown will now host the second seeded Lady Renegades from Shawnee for the title. |
High School Lacrosse: Thursday, May 25, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty It's that scenario that's played out in an athlete's mind about scoring that last second shot to win a game. That particular scene was set in the opening round of the South Jersey Group B girl's lacrosse game played at Lenape. Fifth seeded Cherry Hill East was trailing the fourth seeded Lady Indians by a single goal with less than thirty seconds remaining in regulation. Kelly Dallas came through with the game tying goal for the Lady Cougars and this game appeared to be headed for overtime. But that's when Diana Shalkowski received the ball off of the draw and rushed down field and deposited the game winning goal. Cherry Hill East would advance to the next round with their 10-9 victory over Lenape. |
High School Lacrosse: Wednesday, May 10, 2006 By Clark Washington Sure there's always that one player, Tom Verchio, who can completely take a game over by themselves. Defenses try their best to contain that player, Tom Verchio, but even the best teams can only limit the clear path shot attempts by that player. When Washington Township traveled to Cherry Hill East, Tom Verchio took only what the Cougars' defense gave him but still was able to score. The Minutemen were able to capitalize on their team speed setting up good shots and finally broke this game open during the second half. Washington Township would defeat Cherry Hill East 15-2 in an Olympic Conference boys' lacrosse game. |
High School Lacrosse: Friday, April 28, 2006 By Stephanie Wright The Olympic Conference American Division has teams that have demonstrated their ability of scoring goals. Three of those teams have been considered as top ranking girls' lacrosse teams in our area while Cherokee and Cherry Hill East were not that far behind. Each and every team from that division could qualify for the post season, but they will have to prove it on the field down the stretch. Both of these teams were in search of their first division win. Proving that they can maintain possession of the ball, the Lady Cougars would be able to hold off Cherokee during the second half. Sam Stern would score six times helping Cherry Hill East to pick up the 12-6 victory. |
High School Basketball: Saturday, February 11, 2006 By Jerome Michaels David Catalana, executive director of the Shoot Down Cancer Foundation Inc., has been a very busy person putting together another high school basketball tournament. For the past five years, The Olympic-Cape Challenge has given basketball fans in South Jersey one of the most action packed weekends of high-school basketball of the year. With twenty-eight of the best teams from the two best basketball conferences in South Jersey set to do battle at Timber Creek High School for fourteen great match-ups. With the first two games played resulted in the Cape-Atlantic Conference winning the first game and then the Olympic Conference the next, St. Joseph and Cherry Hill East took center stage. The Wildcats would stay one step ahead of Cherry Hill East and come away with the 58-50 victory. Norm White led St. Joseph's in scoring with 23 points. |
High School Wrestling: Saturday, February 4, 2006 By Anthony Phillips For the majority of this wrestling match held at Cherry Hill East, the Cougars would look up at the scoreboard only to find themselves trailing the Eagles from Winslow Township. This Olympic Conference match was the first of two matches these teams would be competing in on the day. Neither the coaching staff nor the wrestlers from East appeared too worried about the score as they would trail by two points with two bouts to go. Jesse Cohen would put East ahead with a pin and Noah Bellar would avoid being pinned to secure the win. The Cougars would defeat Winslow Township by a 32-31 margin. |
High School Ice Hockey: Monday, January 23, 2006 By Vincent Lewis Two teams from the Tier I division of the SJHSIHL were looking to gain some momentum before the playoffs met on the ice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. Both Eastern and Cherry Hill East were looking to pick up an important win for the team as the regular season was coming to an end. Eastern would lead by one goal heading into the second period, but East would erupt for six goals all scored by different players to put this game away. Cherry Hill East's John Faford would record a goal and two assists during that very success period. East, behind goalie Mike McNulty's 19 saves, blasted past Eastern by a final score of 8-1. |
High School Ice Hockey: Friday, January 6, 2006 By Mike Costantino Christopher Powers' goal late in the third period snapped a 6-6 tie and gave Cherry Hill East a 7-6 victory over Clearview in a see-saw affair played at Hollydell on Friday night. Gary Tagland led East in scoring with two goals and Kyle Poderis had a hat trick for Clearview. Clearview out-played East in the first period, as goals by Mike Sullivan, Pat Coghlan and two by Poderis were sandwiched around goals by Tagland and Andrew Roth, and Clearview headed into the second period, seemingly in control with a 4-2 lead. |
High School Basketball: Tuesday, January 3, 2006 By Joyce Sagerty A basketball schedule is designed to give every team a chance to compete against every team from a division in order to determine who’s the best and claim the title. When that time comes when a division match up takes place, it’s very important early in the season to come away with the win. Two teams that knew the importance of their time to compete against one another were Cherry Hill East and the Minutemaids from Washington Township. After three quarters of play were completed, the Cougars would watch their double digit lead shrink down to just two points. East would rely on converting their free throws down the stretch to preserve their 50-45 victory over Township. |
High School Field Hockey: Saturday, October 15, 2005 By Susan Hall The month of October has a few indications that things are about to change in our area. The color of the leaves began to switch into fall mode, the temperatures drop a few degrees and the cutoff for making the post season can change a team’s hopes of making their run towards the states. Two teams that not only share the same town name, but also share that winning attitude as the first time they met last month neither team could decide a winner. Cherry Hill West was hosting Cherry Hill West in an Olympic Conference cross city rivalry. With the game tie at one at the start of the second half, Krista Taylor would score off of a corner that eventually gave the Lions the 2-1 victory over Cherry Hill West. |
