Robert Speckman stopped 37 shots and Colin Davis netted three goals and an assist as St. Joe’s upset Cherokee 7-4 at the Skate Zone in Voorhees. After spotting Cherokee a 1-0 lead on a goal by Patrick McMahon midway through the period, goals by Davis and Mike Slusarz less than three minutes apart gave St. Joe’s a 2-1 lead heading into the second period. St. Joe’s has been hot lately, winning two out of its last three despite dressing mostly underclassmen and has steadily improved since moving up from Tier 2.
Jeff Burd tied the game at 2-2 seventeen seconds into the second period but Cherokee spent a good portion of the second period short-handed and St. Joe was able to capitalize. With a two-man advantage, Davis scored to make it 3-2 then thirty-four seconds later Chris Fleagle connected for a 4-2 lead. Salvatore DiPompo added another power play goal for a 5-2 lead before Mike Scian scored a late goal for Cherokee to cut the lead to 5-3. Burd brought Cherokee to 5-4 with just over four minutes left in the game, but goals by Davis and Chris Anderson sealed the win for St. Joe’s and should bolster their confidence looking towards next season.
