After an emotional and moving pre-game ceremony honoring teammate Jeff Burd, Cherokee played an inspired game as they defeated Moorestown 7-3 to advance in the SJHSIHL tournament. Louis Sarcone honored his fallen linemate by scoring two goals and leading a balanced attack as six different players scored for Cherokee. Coach Rumbos could not have asked for a better start as Cherokee scored four goals in the first period and never looked back. Dan Shaw opened the scoring in the games first minute and the packed house at the Skate Zone in Voorhees erupted. Mick Scian, Kevin Magnin and Sarcone also found the net, as Cherokee was relentless with their pressure. Moorestown finally responded on the power play in the final sixteen seconds of the period as Dan Greene cut the lead to 4-1.
Goals by Mike Garofolo and Sarcone again put Cherokee in command at 6-1 after two periods. Ian Gill scored for Moorestown three minutes into the third period to temporarily give them some life, but Kevin Magnin answered later in the period on a break to put Cherokee ahead 7-2. Colin Corley scored late in the game for Moorestown, but tonight belonged to a group of young boys from Marlton who have dedicated the rest of the season to Jeff Burd.
