High School Ice Hockey: Monday, February 21, 2000
By Mike Costantino Brandon Gould had two goals and two assists and Sean Zahacewski added a goal and three assists to lead Cherokee to a 6-0 win against Cherry Hill West in SJHSIHL JVB playoff action at the Coliseum on Monday night. Cherokee went on the power play almost immediately, and just twenty seconds into the game Gould scored on a feed from Zahacewski and that quickly it was 1-0. With West unable to generate much offense, Cherokee would score two goals in twenty-four seconds. Again it was Gould and Zahacewski doing the damage, first Gould set up Dan Redner to make it 2-0 and then Gould scored his second of the game from Zahacewski and Redner, and the period would end with Cherokee up 3-0. With JVB Player of the Year Chris Sabol in nets for Cherokee, a three goal lead is almost a certainty. Early in the second period the lead grew to 4-0 as Zahacewski was sent in by Gould on a breakaway and when the goalie went for the first move, Zahacewski drew the puck to his backhand and lifted it into an empty net. At the eleven-minute mark, Shane English directed the puck on net and Newt Wallen jammed home the puck and it was 5-0. Mike Koszyk closed out the scoring on the power play late in the third period again with English assisting and Cherokee advanced with a 6-0 win. Photos by Boog Williams
