High School Ice Hockey: Friday, February 5, 1999
By Mike Costantino John Stewart scored four goals and assisted on four others, while Kyle Kelly added a hat trick along with an assist to pace Cherokee to an easy 11-2 victory over St. John Neumann in a Tier 2 SJHSIHL game played at Hollydell on Friday night. Stewart scored an unassisted goal at the eleven-minute mark and the Chiefs led 1-0. Before the period would end, they would add five more goals and never looked back. Scoring four goals in a span of one minute and thirty seven seconds had to be a team record as Al McGinn, Kelly, Stewart and Frank Lord scored. Now with thirty seconds left in the period, Steve Boianelli would make it 6-0 Cherokee. Eddie Marker, who scored both goals for the Pirates, got his first early in the second period to breathe some life into his team. But twelve seconds later, Kelly scored his second of the game with Dan Murphy and Stewart assisting and a 7-1 lead that took the wind out of the Pirates sails. Midway through the second period, Chiefs' goalie Charles stoned Marker twice on breakaways and seconds later Rota with the assist to Al McGinn scored, and it was 8-1. The period ended with Marker scoring on the power play and it was 8-2. Stewart then scored the next two, both with the man advantage and Kelly completed his hat trick scoring on the tail end of a three-on-one and an 11-2 win for the Chiefs.
