High School Basketball: Saturday, January 31, 1998
By Art Redd Kecia Rosado had the hot hand against Cherokee and would not be denied her points. With the score tied at 26 at the break, the Lady Red Devils ran away in the second half to defeat Cherokee by 12. Rosado was able to take the ball up the court and into the lane with authority. Once in the lane, she could either put the shot up or dish it off to the opener player. Rancocas Valley out scored Cherokee 19 to 8 in the deciding third quarter. Both teams played evenly in the final quarter, but the Lady Chiefs could not make up the deficit. Cherokee came out strong in the opening quarter out scoring Rancocas Valley on good inside points and pressuring the boards. Janel Schillig controlled the offensive floor for Cherokee and stayed with Lady Devils through two quarters. Coach Denine Brown used a series of full court pressure and man to man defense to force over turnovers at the beginning of the second half. Khalilah Smith came up with several blocked shots and defensive rebounds to turn away Cherokee's inside game. But it was the two time Liberty Division first team player Kecia Rosado who took over the game in the second half. She finished with a game high 28 points to help defeat Cherokee 62 to 50. Janel Schillig scored 19 points for Cherokee.
