South Jersey Football: Lynx Advance to the Eastern Conference Championship Monday, October 17, 2005 South Jersey Lynx Press Release After dealing with having to travel after earning home field advantage, the South Jersey Lynx (12-1) advance to the Eastern Conference Championship by defeating the Hudson County Saints (10-3) 27-2. The Lynx came into the game very confident despite having little knowledge of the Saints. The game started off slow for the Lynx who lost possession of the opening kickoff when the ball hopped along the turf into the hands of the Saints. The Lynx defense continued where they left off from the Terminators game. They forced the Saints offense to punt. After a punt and an interception on the next possession, Marty Cross found Edwin Diaz up the sideline from 37 yards out for the only score of the first half.Hudson Valley did get spark with about 2:10 left before the half after Lennard Byrd broke through the line and rumbled 58 yards to the Lynx 42. The defense was under pressure since the Saints were riding the momentum of recovering a Lynx fumble on the Saints 3 yard line and the big pick up by Byrd. The defense held on and the Saints ran out of time without getting any closer to field goal range. The secong half was a big difference, the Saints opening possession proved to be their best drive holding the ball for 9 plays 41 yards but yet another turnover on downs. On the Lynx first possession of the half, Jeffrey Love caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Cross to make it 13-0. In the 4th quarter, Cross completed the 7 play 63 yard drive with a 14 yard run. The Saints punter Mike Hominik punted the ball inside the 10 yard line which led to the Saints Kevin Drake tackling Cross in the endzone for the 2 point safety. 20-2. They tried to mount a comeback but it stalled when Delvin Jones intercepted the Matt Chanowsky pass and returned it 60 yards for the score. Kicker Ryan Peterson was 3 for 4 on extra points (bad snap). The Lynx defense, which has not given up any points in the playoffs was led by Gary Sunkett, Chris Eberly, Damen Wilson, Edward Dover, and Maurice Taylor. The Lynx move on to face the perrenial Central Penn Piranha (15-0) Saturday at 7:00pm. This is a must see. Tickets available at the gate.
