Cross Country Spotlight: Monday, December 11, 2006 By Bob Heller PHILADELPHIA University of the Sciences junior cross country runner Joy Aifuwa were amongst the seven female athletes named to the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Cross Country Team. This is second consecutive year that Aifuwa has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Cross Country Team, joining Carolyn Roberts of Cabrini College, Rachel McCormick of Rutgers-Camden and Rachel Papin of LaSalle as repeat selections. Aifuwa (Edison High School/Edison, NJ), was the Devils top runner this season, finishing no lower than fourth place in five of the six races she competed in and placing second at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championships, leading the Devils to a fourth place finish. Aifuwa recorded second place finishes at the Delaware Valley College Invitational (9/2); Belmont Classic (9/30) and Goldey Beacom Invitational (10/7) while taking third at the Cabrini Invitational (10/14) and fourth at the Philadelphia Metro Championships (9/23). Joy recorded her best time 5,000-meter race time of the season at the Cabrini Invitational, finishing in 20:09. After earning All-CACC honors for the third consecutive year with her second place finish at the conference championship meet, Aifuwa placed 71st overall at the NCAA East Regional meet, leading the Devils to a 21st place finish amongst the 32 teams competing. Aifuwa has also excelled in the classroom, recording a 3.49 grade point average while pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. She earned Dean’s List honors in each of her four semesters and was named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for the 2005 season as well as the CACC 2005 Fall All-Academic Team. Joining Aifuwa on the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Cross Country Team are Carolyn Roberts of Cabrini College (Area Performer of the Year), Rachel McCormick of Rutgers-Camden, Rachel Papin of La Salle, Frances Koons of Villanova, Sara McNally of Ursinus College and Andrea Florida of St. Joseph’s University. The three-time All-CACC performer recently completed her third season of competition for the Devils. Aifuwa is majoring in Pharmacy while pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. |
