Cross Country Spotlight: Saturday, October 21, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, seeking their second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship, placed fourth overall at this morning's meet at Carousel Park in Wilmington, Delaware. The Devils finished with 105 points, 18 behind third place Philadelphia University and 20 behind second place Felician College. Georgian Court University won the meet for the fifth time in the seven-year history of the championship. In those seven years, the Devils have never finished any lower than fourth place. Joy Aifuwa (Jr., Edison HS/Edison, N.J.) paced the Devils, finishing in second place overall with a time of 21:17.00, nine seconds behind overall winner Amanda Scibetta of Felician College. Joy earned All-CACC honors for the third consecutive year with her second place finish. In those three years, Aifuwa has finished no lower than third place overall, coming in second in 2004 and third last year. Beth Crawford (Fr., Camden Catholic HS/Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Hayley Lentz (So., Wilson Area HS/Easton, Pa.) were the second and third Devils to finish, crossing the line in 20th and 21st place respectively. Crawford finished in 22:38.79 while Lentz was a step behind her at 22:40.47. Shelby Rance (Sr., Central Columbia HS/Bloomsburg, Pa.) was USP's fourth finisher, crossing the line in 27th place with a time of 23:18.29. Sarah Verbyla (Fr., Wyoming Valley West HS/Larksville, Pa.) rounded out the Devils top five, finishing in 35th place with a time of 24:10.31. Dana Lulias (Jr., Bishop Shanahan HS/West Chester, Pa.) and Amanda Reed (Sr., Haverford HS/Haverford, Pa.) rounded out the Devils finishers, crossing the line in 38th and 57th place respectively. Lulias finished in 24:24.51 while Reed completed the 5,000-meter course in 26:51.45. The Devils will be competing at the upcoming NCAA East Regional on November 4, 2006 at Slippery Rock University. |
