Cross Country Spotlight: Sunday, September 24, 2006 By Bob Heller The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's cross country team faced 21 schools at yesterday's Philadelphia Metro Championship, finishing in fifth place. The Devils recorded 161 points, 23 behind fourth place Gloucester County College. Franklin and Marshall won the meet for the second consecutive year with 36 points. Richard Stockton University was second with 95 points and Georgian Court University was third with 127 points. Defending individual champion Joy Aifuwa (Jr., Edison HS/Edison, N.J.) finished in fourth place overall with a time of 20:49.76. Shelby Rance (Sr., Central Columbia HS/Bloomsburg, Pa.) was the second Devil to finish, crossing the line in 22:23.91 placing 29th overall. Hayley Lentz (So., Wilson Area HS/Easton, Pa.) followed in 34th place, finishing in 22:38.74. Rounding out the Devils top five finishers were Beth Crawford (Fr., Camden Catholic HS/Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Jean Dugan (Jr., Methacton HS/Norristown, Pa.). Crawford finished in 47th place overall with a time of 23:11.20 while Dugan turned in a solid performance, finishing in 52nd place with a time of 23:27.22. Sarah Verbyla (Fr., Wyoming Valley West HS/Larksville, Pa.) and Nicole Glasser (Fr., Archbishop Molloy HS/Forest Hills, N.Y.) rounded out the Devils top seven finishers. Verbyla finished with a time of 23:52.88 (58th place) while Glasser finished in 25:46.53. The Devils will defend their championship at next week's Belmont Classic, held at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia on September 30, 2006. |
