Tennis Spotlight: Tuesday, October 26, 2004 By Bob Heller Thirteen days between competitions appeared to have no effect on the USP women's tennis team as they returned to action to defeat Arcadia University 7-1 for their fifth straight win. Amanda Bedway (Fr., Blue Mountain HS/Orwigsburg, PA) continues her strong play for the Devils at #1 singles. Bedway recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katie Detweiler, improving her singles record to 9-1 on the season. Rata Hojjat (Jr., Southern Lehigh HS/Center Valley, PA) improved to 5-0 in singles on the season with a 4-6, 6-2 (7-3) win over Stephanie Maloney at #2 singles. The Devils also took the #3 singles match as Tara Torrone (So., Red Bank Catholic, Lincroft, NJ) defeated Brittany McCall 6-3, 6-4. Anna Garber (So., Colonia HS/Colonia, NJ) won her #4 singles match , 6-4, 6-2 over Tanya Chupka while Kristen Hickey (West Milford HS/West Milford, NJ) won her #6 singles match by default, giving the devils five singles wins out of a possible six. In doubles competition, Bedway and Hojjat teamed up to win defeat Detweiler and Maloney 8-4 at #1 doubles while Rachel Salahub (So., Cedar Crest HS/Allentown, PA) and Hickey defeated McCall and Jacqlyn Zukowski 8-4 at #3 doubles. The #2 doubles match was called on account of darkness. USP is now 7-3 overall and will have their final match this Saturday against Georgian Court University. |
