Volleyball Spotlight: Devils Return Home to Defeat Georgian Court Friday, October 1, 2004 By Bob Heller The USP women's volleyball team remained perfect in conference play at home with a 3-1 win tonight over visiting Georgian Court College. The Devils took the first two games, 30-23 and 30-26 before dropping game three 30-26. USP rebounded to take game four 30-24 to win the match, despite having a season low attack percentage of 12% USP was led by Lindsey Wenderoth (Fr., Owings Mills HS/Owings Mills, MD) and Emily Roth (Jr., Dallastown HS/York, PA). Wenderoth and Roth had identical tallies of 12 kills and 19 digs. Gina Mooney (Sr., Jim Thorpe HS/Allentown, PA) added 18 digs while Raeann Petruccelli (So., The Gunnery, New Milford, CT) had 30 assists setting up the Devils offense. Roth had three of the Devils seven kills in game one. USP trailed 15-14 before a side out tied the game at 15-15. With Wenderoth serving, the Devils then scored four straight points to take a 19-15 lead and later expanded their lead to eight points 27-19 en route to the 30-23 win. The second game showed the Devils best attack effort, 12 kills with just two errors in 44 attempts (22.7%) Six different players recorded kills for USP as the Devils overcame an early 6-1 deficit to take a 14-13 lead midway through the match. USP expanded their lead to 22-17 before letting the Lions come back within two 28-26. The Devils then closed the game out with two straight points on a side out and a serve. Georgian Court took game three, 30-26 as the Devils attack game slipped with just six kills in 32 attempts with five errors. The Devils responded and took the match with a win in game four 30-24. Wenderoth and Roth had five and four kills respectively. USP is now 10-5 overall and 8-1 in CACC play (5-0 at home). |
