By Bob Heller University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Women’s Basketball player Leah Shumoski (Marple-Newtown High School/Broomall, PA) was earned her fourth Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor today when she was named Co-Player of the Week for the week ending February 20, 2005. Shumoski becomes the first CACC Women’s Basketball player this season to earn Player of the Week honors four times. Leah shared Player of the Week honors for the Week of January 16, 2005 and January 31, 2005 and earned the award for the week ending November 28, 2004 earlier this season. It is also the six time Shumoski has been recognized by the CACC for her accomplishments on the basketball court, having been named to the CACC honor roll for the weeks ending January 10, 2005 and January 3, 2005. Shumoski, a 6’0” junior forward, averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 4 steals and 2.7 blocked shots leading the Devils to a perfect 3-0 record for the week. Shumoski shot 46.3% from the field (19-41). Opening the week against Goldey Beacom College, Shumoski became just the second women’s basketball player in school history to record a triple double. Leah scored 13 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had a career-high 10 assists. In addition Shumoski also recorded three steals and had a pair of blocked shots. Shumoski followed her performance against Goldey Beacom with an 11-point, 6 rebound, 6-steal effort against Georgian Court College. Her six steals mark the eighth time this season that Shumoski has recorded five or more steals in a game. Leah concluded her stellar week with her 11th double-double of the season against Nyack College, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds and tied her season high with four blocked shots. With her 45 points this week, Leah moved into from 6th place to third place on the Devils all-time career scoring list with 1,295 points. Shumoski also moved into 4th place on the Devils all-time rebound list with her 10-rebuond performance against Nyack. The junior forward now has 690 for her career. The former Marple-Newtown High School athlete is in her third season of play for the Devils. Leah is currently second on the Devils in scoring (16.4 ppg.), and leads the Devils in rebounding (8.6 rpg.), blocked shots (38, 1.52 per game) and steals (93, 3.7 per game). Shumoski, the defending CACC Player of the Year, currently ranks amongst the CACC top 10 statistical leaders in five categories: scoring (3rd); rebounding (6th); steals (1st); blocked shots (3rd) and assist/turnover ratio (9th). Shumoski also ranks eighth nationally for NCAA Division II in steals. Shumoski, a pharmacy major, is pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. |
