Tennis Spotlight: Friday, April 16, 2004 By Bob Heller Last year, the Caldwell men's tennis team walked off the court against the Devils after securing enough points to win the match and defaulted in their final four contests on the afternoon. This year, it was a different story as the USP men's tennis team was not going to let that happen again. This time the Devils got the five wins necessary to win the match, and stayed to complete the match, winning by a final score of 5-3. The Devils got three wins in singles competition at #1, #5 and #6 singles. Ryan Pell (Fr., West York Area HS/York, PA) thoroughly dominated his #1 singles match, defeating Marcus Collins, 6-0, 6-0. Dave Sen (Fr., Eastern Regional HS/Voorhees, NJ) defeated Roman Veselinov at #5 singles 6-3, 7-5 and Yusuf Hassanali(Aga Khan Mzizima / Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania) shutout Helder Ferraira at #6 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Devils lost hard-fought three-set matches at #2 and #3 singles while at #4 singles the match was tied at 1 set apiece when called. In doubles competition, the Devils earned wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Pell and Dan Lewycky (Jr., Oratory Prep HS/Livingston, NJ) teamed up at #2 doubles to defeat Veselinov and Chris Lacquira, 9-7 while Sen and Nirav Pandya (Fr., Raritan HS/Hazlet, NJ) defeated Collins and Ferraira , 8-1 at #3 doubles. The Devils are now 6-1 overall. |
